I have long believed that the Rum Point / Cayman Kai neighbourhood of Grand Cayman hosts the finest sunset views. Yes the west coast of seven mile beach also gets a pretty decent sunset, but, honestly, it could be anywhere.
In Cayman Kai, with its undulating bays and tree-lined shores, the sunset is naturally framed by silhouetted sand spits and palm fronds.
When recently staring out to sea at the day’s end, the colours that reflected in the shallow pools on the sand bar were too vibrant to ignore. Hence a painting ensued.
“Sunset at Rum Point” is a celebration that on November 20th 2021 Cayman’s borders reopen to tourism for the first time since the lockdown of March 2020. We can soon share the beauty of our islands with visitors. The abundance of colour and light at sunset is too amazing not to share. I painted it to share it, and soon many will be able to see it first hand.
