Genesis

Definition of Genesis: The origin of formation of something or the start of an idea.

I moved! Did I tell you? No, I haven’t moved home. I have just stopped working from home.

It’s funny how when you put something you need out into the universe, sometimes it just appears. I needed somewhere to paint. My dining table at home was looking forlorn that it had been commandeered by a onslaught of canvases, brushes and paint pallets. The surrounding floor was fed up with speckled paint splashes being peeled up weekly. The nearby kitchen tap was covered in paint, no longer shiny, no longer clean and worthy of a health-and-safety inspection the way I normally like my kitchen to look. So I decided it was time to move, and find a small space just for painting. In my mind, it could be a space almost like a shrine to painting, a place I could go to find my flow, and create. It would be bright, and friendly, and with a sea view. it would be perfect. Except….. there weren’t any available spaces to be found.

So I put it out there. Like a wish. Or a prayer. Or something bigger than me anyway. And then I waited.

Then one day, D and I had a meeting with an established architect, in his very glamorous George Town sea view office. We were cooing over his contemporary work space, I was all “ooh nice place you have here” and he was all “thanks, it’s perfect for me.” As the meeting drew to a close, discussions of planning permission finalised, the architect mentioned his disappointment that a kitchen company that was due to move into the space upstairs had pulled out. “Any chance I could see the space?” I asked.

This painting is inspired by the location of my new studio space in central George Town, the capital city by the sea, in the Cayman Islands. The studio is small, has a sea view, and sits above an established architect’s office. The building is across from the main road that runs along the coast and past the main port. In short, it’s perfect for me. The starting point of many coastal – city inspired paintings to come, this space represents the beginning of a new chapter.
